CREATIVE LEARNING
ScratchWorx
ScratchWorx is een experimenteel project wat begin 2003 is gestart en 
waarin scholieren van het VMBO in teams de basisprincipes van het maken van 
film en muziek leren. Het project valt onder het vak CKV en speelt zich af 
op school, in musea, in de leefomgeving van de leerlingen en in het 
Creative Learning Lab in de Waag. ScratchWorx wordt uitgevoerd met speciaal 
ontwikkelde hard en software. De ScratchWorx hardware is een mengpaneel wat 
met zijn ronde vormen en bleepende knopjes doet denken aan een battle 
station uit Startrek. De ScratchWorx software is een interface waarmee de 
leerlingen beeld, geluid en tekst kunnen mixen.

ScratchWorx in het Muziektheater
Op uitnodiging van de British Council komt 6, 8 en 9 mei het Random Dance 
Theatre naar het Muziektheater. In hun voorstelling Nemesis presenteert de 
groep een dansvorm waarbij dans en technologie met elkaar interacteren. 
Voorafgaand aan de voorstellingen verzorgt Waag Society samen met 
dansdocenten van het Muziektheater en de British Council zes voorbereidende 
workshops. Deelnemers aan de workshops zijn leerlingen van zeven scholen 
voor voortgezet onderwijs uit Amsterdam en omstreken. Zij volgen de 
workshops in het kader van het vak Culturele en Kunstzinnige Vorming (CKV).
De leerlingen maken met ScratchWorx zelf een realtime DJ/VJ voorstelling: 
er is een directe interactie tussen de 'spelers' en de verschillende typen 
media. Iedere voorstelling is daarom uniek.
De leerlingen werken steeds in twee groepjes: een groep die de technologie 
beheert, en een tweede groep die danst. De DJ/VJ sessie van de leerlingen 
wordt geprojecteerd op een groot scherm in de workshop ruimte.

ScratchWorx party
Achttien leerlingen van de IVKO school in Amsterdam geven op woensdag 28 
mei een ScratchWorx party. In een zestal DJ/VJ sessies zullen de leerlingen 
de stills, tekst, audio en video die ze hebben voorbereid in de lessen, 
live mixen aan de ScratchWorx console. Hun verrichtingen achter de knoppen 
worden zichtbaar gemaakt op een groot scherm.
ScratchWorx is ontwikkeld door Waag Society in samenwerking met studenten 
van de EMMA opleiding aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

Workshops NINE(9)
Op 3 maart ging NINE(9) on line in Imagine IC, Amsterdam Zuidoost. NINE(9) 
is opgebouwd uit digitale mappen. Elke map biedt ruimte aan een persoonlijk 
verhaal, opgebouwd uit 9 fotos, teksten en geluiden. Nine(9) brengt 
persoonlijke verhalen samen, linkt ze aan elkaar en maakt zo uitwisseling 
mogelijk tussen verschillende generaties en culturele groepen.
Imagine IC is gestart met wekelijkse workshops voor iedereen die een map 
wil maken. Nine(9)-specialist Paul Keller begeleidt geïnteresseerden bij 
het invoeren van fotomateriaal, tekst en geluid. De workshops zijn elke 
donderdag van 15 tot 21 uur.
Tijdens het Zomerfestival in juli nodigt Imagine IC jonge thuisblijvers uit 
om in NINE(9) verslag te doen van hun belevenissen. Ook worden workshops 
georganiseerd waarin senioren met behulp van NINE(9) hun herinneringen aan 
het slavernijverleden vast kunnen leggen.

Sarai reader03 - Shaping Technologies
De derde editie van de Sarai Reader, Shaping Technologies' , bespreekt een 
aantal situaties die de ontmoeting markeren tussen natuur en cultuur, 
mensen en machines, en kennis en macht. Een cutting edge collectie van 
originele artikelen en beelden van theoretici, critici, fotografen, 
filosofen, activisten, kunstenaars, ontwerpers en programmeurs uit vele 
delen van de wereld.
De reader is samengesteld in het kader van het Waag Society - Sarai 
uitwisselingsprogramma en is verkrijgbaar bij het Fort van Sjakoo

Follow-up Amsterdam Realtime
Sinds het succes van Amsterdam Realtime, wat begon tijdens een 
tentoonstelling in het Gemeentearchief Amterdam over Kaarten van Amsterdam, 
is Waag Society op een aantal manieren doorgegaan op de resultaten van het 
project. Een verzamelde digitale neerslag van de sporen en routes worden in 
cd-rom vorm opgenomen in het Amsterdams Gemeentearchief. Parallel hieraan 
komt een dataset tot stand om de projectresultaten te analyseren en ter 
beschikking te stellen aan diverse geinteresseerde wetenschappers.
Daarnaast is uit de vele verzoeken Riga, hoofdstad van Letland, gekozen als 
plaats om een variant op Amsterdam Realtime uit te voeren. De plaatselijke 
implementatie wordt uitgevoerd door RIXC, een cultureel medialab. Van 15 
tot 18 mei vindt het RIX festival Arts + Communication plaats. Tijdens het 
festival is Esther Polak samen met een afgevaardigde van Waag Society in 
Riga aanwezig om Amsterdam Realtime / Realtime Riga toe te lichten.
Er is ook veel aandacht voor het project uit de wereld van stadsplanning en 
ruimtelijke inrichting. Daarom is het project uitgenodigd om deel uit te 
maken van de Eerste Internationale Architectuur Biennale Rotterdam. In het 
zogeheten MobLab is ruimte voor een aantal projecten dat als inspiratie of 
toekomstvisie kan dienen voor het thema mobiliteit. De 1AB vindt plaats van 
7 mei tot 7 juli.

Connected! - Anatomic Club
Begin dit jaar is in de Waag een clubhuis geoopend voor jonge kunstenaars, 
om te werken aan de opbouw van een internationale gemeenschap waarin 
instrumenten en software wordt ontwikkeld voor interactieve breedbandige 
streaming: de Anatomic Club. Op 11 mei neemt de Anatomic Club deel aan het 
dance / media event KeyLink in New York en Amsterdam, van Reyna Perdomo met 
de Zonos Dos Dance Company en KeyWorx kunstenaar Eric Redlinger. Thema van 
de performance is het sociaal-politieke proces wat zich in de afgelopen 
vijftig jaar in Zuidamerikaanse landen heeft voltrokken, doorspekt met de 
actuele realiteit van migranten in New York en Europa.

Publicatie Interfacing Realities
Op 31 mei komt bij V2_publishing het boek 'Making Art of Databases' uit, 
naar aanleiding van de masterclasses die zijn gehouden tijdens DEAF 2003. 
Naar aanleiding van haar Masterclass Collaborative Culture, over 
interdisciplinariteit in de kunsten, schreef Sher Doruff een artikel voor 
deze publicatie.

CREATIVE LEARNING
ScratchWorx
ScratchWorx is an experimental project that began at the start of 2003 and 
in which pupils of technical and vocational training colleges learn the 
basics of making film and music. For ScratchWorx special hard and software 
has been developed. The ScratchWorx hardware is a mixer, and the software 
is an interface with which pupils can mix images, sound and text.

ScratchWorx in the Muziektheater
At the invitation of the British Council the Random Dance Theatre will be 
performing at the Muziektheater on 6, 8 and 9 May. In their performance 
Nemesis the group presents a dance form in which dance and technology 
interact. Prior to the performances, Waag Society together with dance 
teachers of the Muziektheater and the British Council will give six 
preparatory workshops. Material of Nemesis will be the basis of the 
workshops. Participants are pupils of seven secondary schools in and around 
Amsterdam. The pupils will use ScratchWorx to make a realtime DJ/VJ 
session: there is a direct interaction between the pupils and the various 
media types.The pupils work in two teams: one team controls the technology, 
the other team dances. The DJ/VJ session will be projected on a big screen 
in the workshop space.

ScratchWorx Party
Eightteen pupils of the IVKO school in Amsterdam will feature in a 
ScratchWorx party on Wednesday 28 May. In about six DJ/VJ sessions the 
pupils will use the stills, text, audio and video which they have prepared 
in a live mix at the ScratchWorx console. Their actions at the ScratchWorx 
console will be made visible on a big screen. ScratchWorx is developed by 
Waag Society in cooperation with EMMA students of the Utrecht School of the 
Arts.

Workshops NINE(9)
On 3 March NINE(9) went on line at Imagine IC, Southeast Amsterdam. NINE(9) 
is composed of digital maps. Each map offers room for a personal story , 
build in 9 pictures, texts and sounds. NINE(9) brings together personal 
stories, links them to each other and thus makes possible an exchange 
between several generations and cultural groups.
Imagine IC has started weekly workshops open to everybody who wants to 
compose a NINE(9) map. NINE(9) expert Paul Keller assists with uploading 
photo material, text and sound. The workshops are held on Thursdays from 3 
to 9pm.
During the Summer Festival in July Imagine IC invites young inhabitants of 
the neighbourhood to report their adventures in NINE(9). Senior people use 
NINE(9) to record their memories of slavery in a workshop setting.

Sarai reader03 - Shaping Technologies
The third edition of the Sarai reader, 'Shaping Technologies' brings to the 
fore a series of situations and predicaments that mark the encounter 
between people and machines, between nature and culture, and between 
knowledge and power.
A cutting edge collection of original writing and images by theorists, 
critics, photographers, philosophers, engineers, activists, artists, 
designers media practitioners and programmers from many parts of the world.
The reader has been compiled as part of the Sarai Waag Exchange programme
(http://sarai.waag.org) and is available in the Netherlands at Fort van

Follow-up Amsterdam Realtime
In Amsterdam Realtime, inhabitants of the city were invited to draw a 
highly personal map by carrying a GPS tracer for a week. Their routes 
through Amsterdam were projected on to a big screen, on to of each other. 
Thus, the culminating traces and routes formed an alternative and very 
current city map: Amsterdam Realtime.
Since the success of the Amsterdam Realtime project, that started at the 
'Maps of Amsterdam' exhibition in the Amsterdam Municipal Archives, Waag 
Society has continued working with its results in a number of ways. The 
maps that were drawn in the project are documented in cd-rom format and 
available in the Municipal Archives.Parallel to this a dataset will be 
compiled in order to analyse the projects results and make them available 
to various interested scientists. Out of many requests Riga, capital of 
Latvia, has been chosen as the location for a new version of Amsterdam 
Realtime. The local implementation is done by RIX, a cultural medialab. 
 From 15 to 18 May the RIX Arts + Communication festival will take place, 
which focuses on architecture, space and new media.

The Amsterdam Realtime project also attracted a lot of attention from town 
planners. This has led to the project being invited to take part in the 
First International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (1AB). The 1AB takes 
place under the title 'Mobility a room with a view'. In the so-called 
MobLab there is room for a number of projects which can serve as an 
inspiration or vision of the future for the theme mobility. The 1AB takes 
place from 7 May to 7 July.

SENSING PRESENCE
Connected! - Anatomic Club
At the start of this year, in the Waag a club has opened for young artists, 
to work on building an international community in which tools and software 
are being developed for interactive broadband streaming: the Anatomic Club. 
On 11 May the Anatomic Club takes part in the dance/media event KeyLink in 
New York and Amsterdam, of Reyna Perdomo with the Zonos Dos Dance Company 
and KeyWorx artist Eric Redlinger. Theme of the performance is the 
social-political process of the history of the past 50 years in 
South-American countries, interspersed with the realities of migrants in 
New York and Europe.

On 31 May the book 'Making Art of Databases' will come out with 
V2_Publishing, as accompaniment to the masterclasses that were held at 
DEAF03. Sher Doruff contributed an article on the backgrounds of her 
masterclass Collaborative Culture, on interdisciplinarity in the arts.
